Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine or Osteopathic
Manipulation
Osteopathic manipulation is a form of treatment in which Osteopathic
physicians use their hands to bring about improvement in the condition of the
body. We recognize that all of your body systems are
interrelated, and know that the musculoskeletal system can dramatically affect
health through its influence on the nervous, circulatory and immune systems.
There are numerous types of modalities that encompass
Osteopathic Manipulation. All of these modalities are designed to
correct structural problems and promote healing. They include, but are not
limited to:
Cranial
Osteopathy
Visceral Osteopathy
Myofascial Release
Lymphatic Technique
Muscle Energy
Counterstrain
High Velocity
Facilitated Positional Release
Ligamentous Articular Release
Somatoemotional Release
The type of modality chosen as treatment is dependent upon the patient’s
age, their illness or injury, and the onset and course of their problem. Many of these modalities can
be used in the treatment of any area of the body. In addition to providing
relief of pain and stiffness, patients usually experience an ongoing, improved
sense of well-being and health.
Osteopathic manipulation is most commonly thought of
as a treatment for back pain, neck pain or acute injury. However, it is also used in the treatment of many
medical problems or disease
states.
Osteopathic manipulation is also a safe and effective way to
treat
infants and small children. It is a painless and medication free
modality to help with problems such as colic, feeding problems, birth or head
trauma, chronic
ear infections and delayed development.
